Make Long Distance Calls at Local Rates With VoIP

January 5th, 2010

VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol is the most cost-effective means of telecommunication. It allows you to use your computer and the Internet to communicate with anybody. The only cost involved in it is the broadband or dial up connection. This method is known as Residential VOIP, just opposite to a VOIP Business Phone System.

As a rule, to use your VoIP system effectively, you should be sitting in front of your computer. This is because the voice of the person you are speaking to will come through the speakers of your computer. Likewise, you will need to speak into a microphone attached to your computer. Like using a headset for conventional telephones, having a headset for your VoIP system is also possible and it is just as convenient.

A VOIP headset is comfortable to use and it fits on the head in the same way as a headset for any landline. It comes with an ear piece and a small microphone that fits close to the mouth. Therefore, one can hear the voice of the person via the ear piece as well as talk into the microphone of the headset.

What residential VoIP means is that you can download the technology onto your computer. Then you can communicate with your family and friends the exact manner you would do on the telephone. But this time you are using your computer as a telephone instead of the telephone set. Your family and friends with whom you want to talk also need to have the technology on their computers.

It is very easy to download and use this technology. Once the technology is installed, you can make and receive calls as you can do with your fixed phone. You can replace the analogue phone line and use broadband phone as your primary phone. The voice signal transmitted over the internet using VoIP technology is considered as data service. That is why, VoIP phone service is free from long distance fees paid by local phone companies.

Alternatives to Phone Companies – a VOIP Solution

January 4th, 2010

Many things have been mentioned about the virtues of the many of possible VOIP solutions and how VOIP technology is one of the best inventions since the creation of the web. Many marketing campaigns have been put in action due to the fact that Voice over IP has so many advantages over regular phone service, that a baby could tell one is better than the other, so making a financially good decision in this field is not that confusing.

There are several phone companies out there that you would think by having so much competition that prices would be cheaper but they aren’t. Local phone companies who have no close competition are the worst of any kind, because they keep the prices high regardless of demand. They know that people need their service so they charge whatever they want. No pain no gain they say!. Well if you are one of those people that are or have experienced these problem there is a new solution for you , VoIP. VoIp short for Voice over Internet Protocol which is the most cost-effective technology right now available on the web.

Everyone that knows about VoIP is using it as well as spreading the word to everyone they know. VoIP works by modulating conversations into a digital digital packets of data that are transmitted over the web. If you want to call a regular phone number then the signal is changed back into a regular telephone signal before reaching its destination. Software applications which allow you to have voice communications through the web use the same technology. You can use VoIP to do all your calling for low rates. Unlike phone companies who often charge high rates per minute most VoIP providers only charge a small monthly fee, which other companies just can’t match. This would allow you to eliminate the need for one detailed bill a month. VoIP allows you to make international as well as local phone calls.

The truth is that you decide where you call and how much you want to pay. There are three calling options when using VoIp. You can call by using a VoIp telephone , using a normal telephone with a VoIP adapter or using a computer with the necessary equipment. With VoIP you can talk while working on the web. With some phone companies charging as much as thirty five cents a minute or hundreds for unlimited calling, Voice over internet protocol is the best choice for those who use the phone a lot. Its not only affordable but its more convenient.

If you are the type of person who travels a lot and only use your phone when you are home why pay so much for something you barely use?. VoIP is the modern technology that is a must have for anyone who owns a computer. Whether you just enjoy chatting on the phone or if you use it for business, VoIP is for you.

How Does VoIP Work? Understanding the Basics

December 15th, 2009

How does VoIP work? Like many people, you may have already heard of VoIP. If you weren’t born in this decade, you may still wonder what it really is. What can VoIP do for you and how exactly is it useful?

Basic Concept

VoIP stands for voice over internet protocol. These days, it is considered an alternative to the typical method of communication involving telephones. Instead of using telephone sets that transmit analog signals, VoIP converts these signals to digital chunks. These are reconverted to audio data when it reaches the recipient. The entire transmission happens over the internet. Although VoIP technology is still far from being preferred and considered standard, some people think that VoIP will eventually replace telephones. It could very well be the next step in communications technology.

The Specifics

So how does VoIP work exactly? VoIP is best understood by understanding typical phone calls first. Regular phone calls make use of what is called circuit switching. When you make a call, your call is passed through a series of switches starting from your phone carrier. Once the other party answers the call, the circuit between the two of you is opened.

Instead of circuit switching VoIP uses packet switching. In this technology, your voice is converted to little packets of data. These packets of data come with their instructions of where they should be sent. They are then sent through a variety of possible routes. They take the nearest router and are passed on to succeeding routers until they reach the recipient. When the packets are received, they are reassembled into a form that can be understood.

Advantages of VoIP

VoIP can offer all the features and benefits of a phone service. Its advantage over traditional phones is that VoIP calls can be made from almost any part of the world. Wherever there is an internet connection, you can have VoIP. The technology can provide cheaper calls than standard telephone technology. This is mainly because VoIP does away with costly circuit switching.

Disadvantages of VoIP

VoIP can be fast, convenient and cheap. It has, however its own disadvantages. These disadvantages are basically due to: (1) the current reliance of present systems on telephone technology; and (2) the shortcomings that plague computer technology.

Telephone Connections – Such services for example as security and cable still rely on telephone connections. Unless the whole country or world agrees to switch to VoIP, these services are likely to stick to their old methods.

This is not the biggest concern though. Since VoIP relies on internet technology, it is also susceptible to the problems that confront the internet and computers. You can therefore expect such problems as viral attacks, crashes and stolen packets.

Now you know the basic answer to how does VoIP work. In reality, this piece of technology does hold a lot of potential. Like everything else, the old ways of communicating over long distances can change. VoIP is the first logical shift that can be taken. It may take a long time however, before VoIP can become a fully integrated and snag free system.
