VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol is the most cost-effective means of telecommunication. It allows you to use your computer and the Internet to communicate with anybody. The only cost involved in it is the broadband or dial up connection. This method is known as Residential VOIP, just opposite to a VOIP Business Phone System.

As a rule, to use your VoIP system effectively, you should be sitting in front of your computer. This is because the voice of the person you are speaking to will come through the speakers of your computer. Likewise, you will need to speak into a microphone attached to your computer. Like using a headset for conventional telephones, having a headset for your VoIP system is also possible and it is just as convenient.

A VOIP headset is comfortable to use and it fits on the head in the same way as a headset for any landline. It comes with an ear piece and a small microphone that fits close to the mouth. Therefore, one can hear the voice of the person via the ear piece as well as talk into the microphone of the headset.

What residential VoIP means is that you can download the technology onto your computer. Then you can communicate with your family and friends the exact manner you would do on the telephone. But this time you are using your computer as a telephone instead of the telephone set. Your family and friends with whom you want to talk also need to have the technology on their computers.

It is very easy to download and use this technology. Once the technology is installed, you can make and receive calls as you can do with your fixed phone. You can replace the analogue phone line and use broadband phone as your primary phone. The voice signal transmitted over the internet using VoIP technology is considered as data service. That is why, VoIP phone service is free from long distance fees paid by local phone companies.

Many things have been mentioned about the virtues of the many of possible VOIP solutions and how VOIP technology is one of the best inventions since the creation of the web. Many marketing campaigns have been put in action due to the fact that Voice over IP has so many advantages over regular phone service, that a baby could tell one is better than the other, so making a financially good decision in this field is not that confusing.

There are several phone companies out there that you would think by having so much competition that prices would be cheaper but they aren’t. Local phone companies who have no close competition are the worst of any kind, because they keep the prices high regardless of demand. They know that people need their service so they charge whatever they want. No pain no gain they say!. Well if you are one of those people that are or have experienced these problem there is a new solution for you , VoIP. VoIp short for Voice over Internet Protocol which is the most cost-effective technology right now available on the web.

Everyone that knows about VoIP is using it as well as spreading the word to everyone they know. VoIP works by modulating conversations into a digital digital packets of data that are transmitted over the web. If you want to call a regular phone number then the signal is changed back into a regular telephone signal before reaching its destination. Software applications which allow you to have voice communications through the web use the same technology. You can use VoIP to do all your calling for low rates. Unlike phone companies who often charge high rates per minute most VoIP providers only charge a small monthly fee, which other companies just can’t match. This would allow you to eliminate the need for one detailed bill a month. VoIP allows you to make international as well as local phone calls.

The truth is that you decide where you call and how much you want to pay. There are three calling options when using VoIp. You can call by using a VoIp telephone , using a normal telephone with a VoIP adapter or using a computer with the necessary equipment. With VoIP you can talk while working on the web. With some phone companies charging as much as thirty five cents a minute or hundreds for unlimited calling, Voice over internet protocol is the best choice for those who use the phone a lot. Its not only affordable but its more convenient.

If you are the type of person who travels a lot and only use your phone when you are home why pay so much for something you barely use?. VoIP is the modern technology that is a must have for anyone who owns a computer. Whether you just enjoy chatting on the phone or if you use it for business, VoIP is for you.

Voice Over Internet Protocol is a relatively new method of sending and receiving telephone calls. Sometimes called IP telephony, internet telephony, broadband telephony broadband phone, or voice over broadband, VOIP technology allows you to make voice calls using a broadband internet connection, rather than a regular (analog) traditional phone line. Basically, it is the routing of voice conversations over the internet or through any other IP-based network.

The main benefit of using VOIP technology is that you can use your internet connection, which you are already paying for, to place long distance calls, completely circumventing local phone companies and their charges. Voice Over Internet Protocol does not carry the same taxes and other fees that local phone companies do.

How does VOIP work?

Traditional analog phone connections use analog technology. Simply put, the technology used in Voice Over Internet Protocol works by converting your voice from this analog signal into a digital signal, which can then be sent over the internet. If you are calling a regular phone, the digital signal is converted back into a traditional analog signal before it reaches the destination.

There are three main methods in which Voice Over Internet Protocol is used:

The most common way in which VOIP is used is with an ATA, or Analog Telephone Adaptor. This adaptor allows your existing phone to be used. The phone is connected to the adaptor, which is then routed through your computer and connected to the internet.

Another common way VOIP technology is being used is through the use of IP phones. These phones are specially designed to be used with a VOIP connection. In most ways, they are very similar to traditional house phones, except that rather than having a traditional phone line connector, the IP phones have an Ethernet connector. These IP phones plug directly into your internet router, bypassing the actual PC itself. The actual computer is then not required to be used with the phone. The necessary technologies are self-contained in the actual phone, and connected to the internet directly through the router.

The third most common method of using VOIP technology is called computer to computer, or PC to PC, calling. This method is entirely free and is not subject to any taxes or fees found with local telephone companies. The only things you need are an internet connection, any necessary VOIP software, a computer, and a microphone and speakers.

/>Business managers and owners are looking at new ways to stay ahead of the game. Current ads promise that IP Telephony is the answer to many of today’s business dilemmas. While technology can be used to enhance a business model, technology for technology sake is never the answer. If it has been determined that IP Telephony is one of the tools to boost productivity and customer service; there are ways to purchase that technology.

Years ago, many businesses utilized Centrex lines to reduce large capital expenditures for telephone equipment. This meant that the business kept no main telephone equipment on site, it simply “rented” lines and telephones for each of their phone locations. The goal was to enhance features while reducing cost. However, the opposite became true when new and less expensive competitors were able to compete with the local phone companies. A company that was in business for 10+ years could have easily purchased a phone system of their own a couple times over. Today, the phone company and other IP service providers are offering the next generation of this concept – - Hosted IP or IP Centrex.

The hosted IP/IP Centrex services do offer some very nice benefits including very little or no capital outlay for new phones and features, plus a highly flexible disaster recovery plan for incoming communication.

Some questions that should be asked before instituting a contract for Hosted IP/IP Centrex are as follows: 1.Are the additional features going to enhance business practices? 2.Can the provider effectively deliver 9-1-1 calls? 3.If the goal is monthly payments rather than a large capital purchase – is there a lease option or other type of solution that would provide equity when the term is attained? 4.Is the IP Centrex vendor going to be able to service the contract until completion? Remember that even though a vendor may be new to this type of service, if they have proven to stand by other service roll-outs it may not be a huge risk. 5.Are there short term contracts available? Try to obtain a contract that has a business downturn clause that will allow a reduction of lines so payment is not required for phones no longer need. 6.Is there an installation fee? And if so will this fee combined with the monthly payments exceed a new system purchase?

Many people in the business community today utilize digital telephone systems by a variety of manufacturers. Some manufacturers such as CISCO, 3-Com or Interactive Intelligence only offer IP Telephony. However, others such as NEC, Inter-Tel, Toshiba, Avaya, etc. offer a combination of both digital and IP Telephony or all of one or the other. There are inherent differences between the two technologies. Digital Technology 1.Uses cables that are separate from the computer system. 2.Does not have to run on CAT5 or CAT6 cable. 3.Typically has a telephone cabinet with a processor and separate circuit boards for connection of lines and phones. 4.Very reliable

IP Technology 1.Can run on the same cable as the computer. 2.Must be connected to a minimum of a CAT5 cable even if it does not share with the computer on the desk. 3.Stores system software on a server, in a router or in a traditional telephone cabinet. 4.Competes with bandwidth on the data network.

IP Telephony has benefits that are great for some companies and irrelevant for others. 1.Ability to connect remote workers using a cable modem, DSL line or other high speed internet connection. 2.Customized call routing based upon inbound caller identification, status ID for callers (known as presence). 3.Advanced custom applications. Attendance and student record review in a school district, database integration for car dealership sales and service departments, inventory control and updates for manufacturing companies. 4.Desk to Desk video at a very inexpensive rate. 5.One network to maintain.

While there are benefits to this technology, there are also things to watch out and prepare for (This is just a partial list). *Now that the phone system is part of the data system it is vulnerable to viruses and other spy-ware threats. *Warranty times are generally far less traditional phone systems so the on-going maintenance costs may start 90 days following installation. *IP phones require power at each phone – either by a local power outlet or data switch equipped with Power over Ethernet (PoE) capability. *Quality of Service (QoS) is vital to prioritize voice over data calls. *IP phone have more stringent distance limitations. *A ten year life cycle cannot be anticipated. *Analog lines (plain old telephone lines) and analog phones, fax, modems, etc. are often challenging and costly to connect to a full IP system. *Data cable (minimum CAT5 rating) must be available at each phone location. *The environment must be conducive to the IP equipment. Certain manufacturing floors require refrigerated and sealed cabinets for their PC’s. The same would be required for an IP phone set. *Internal support departments may need to be structured. If there are separate support groups for voice and data they may need to be combined or one eliminated. This assessment is extremely important to the success of an IP Telephony project. Do not overlook this important aspect before making a purchasing decision. Uneducated decisions are recipes for disaster in any project. Don’t rush into a change of this magnitude. Take the time to assess the business functions, the existing network infrastructure and support groups, and make sure the environment and resources are in place this type of change.
