VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol is the most cost-effective means of telecommunication. It allows you to use your computer and the Internet to communicate with anybody. The only cost involved in it is the broadband or dial up connection. This method is known as Residential VOIP, just opposite to a VOIP Business Phone System.

As a rule, to use your VoIP system effectively, you should be sitting in front of your computer. This is because the voice of the person you are speaking to will come through the speakers of your computer. Likewise, you will need to speak into a microphone attached to your computer. Like using a headset for conventional telephones, having a headset for your VoIP system is also possible and it is just as convenient.

A VOIP headset is comfortable to use and it fits on the head in the same way as a headset for any landline. It comes with an ear piece and a small microphone that fits close to the mouth. Therefore, one can hear the voice of the person via the ear piece as well as talk into the microphone of the headset.

What residential VoIP means is that you can download the technology onto your computer. Then you can communicate with your family and friends the exact manner you would do on the telephone. But this time you are using your computer as a telephone instead of the telephone set. Your family and friends with whom you want to talk also need to have the technology on their computers.

It is very easy to download and use this technology. Once the technology is installed, you can make and receive calls as you can do with your fixed phone. You can replace the analogue phone line and use broadband phone as your primary phone. The voice signal transmitted over the internet using VoIP technology is considered as data service. That is why, VoIP phone service is free from long distance fees paid by local phone companies.

VoIP is a technology that converts voice into data that can be transmitted via the Internet using the Internet protocol and at the receiving end, the data is converted back to voice. This allows the users to experience voice conversation with their contacts over the Internet. This mode of communication is very beneficial for people who make ISD phone calls often. People who make ISD calls pay hefty phone bills. It is because they have to pay for every calling minute. Longer the duration of the call, the higher the charge the callers have to pay. Fortunately, these days callers can get rid of the high phone bills with the aid of the VoIP as there are many service providers who offer free VoIP calls. It helps them to have conversation with their contacts for longer duration without worrying about the bill. Callers need not worry about bill because VoIP does provide this service, usually for free. But, to take the advantage of its free calls, the other requirement is that the receiving end (call receiver) must also be using the VoIP services. Normally, there are charges associated with this service when the call receiver is not utilising the VoIP services. As such, one has to look for the utilisation of the VoIP technology and the associated free services that the service providers offer. People who are interested in making free VoIP calls should make for the Internet to find out the websites that deals in such free services. It is very easy to find such websites that provide such free services. The simplicity associated with the utilisation of this service is established with the rising use of this service, on a world wide basis. Making free calls is, therefore, very frequent and the future of communication is bright for people who want to stay in touch with their loved ones or professional contacts. Today, you would also find services that may offer free mobile calls but when their services are compared with that of the VoIP, you will discover that VoIP does make a difference. Any body can decide whether a particular service is favourable for him. One’s decision can be firmed up only after having an understanding the service’s working or performance and at what price. An experience of the service in question shall always help in making such decisions. It has been found that VoIP calls have brought about a lot of advantages associated with communication. If a user is in a mood to compare its performance, he can just go for VoIP broadband services. The difference one can discover is that VoIP uses high speed Internet or broadband instead of a traditional landline connection. Just have a look at the working of the VoIP. Here, the Internet is connected to a phone or receiver. It can be done in two ways, from either a service provider or a particular code given to the user by allowing the user to download the software for VoIP. The user can use his IP address to get started with a broadband phone that can be added form the VoIP service. Thus, the user can have Internet connection attached to his VoIP phone. There are a couple of alternatives for downloading this service. Some of the service providers are iCallGlobe, Skype, Cisco and Google. Before shifting to the VoIP services as the major phone line, the user must make it sure that they work smartly with the technology that is available.

Telephone calls through broadband: this is the future of telephony. Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology represents a revolution in the way we communicate. Here’s an outline of three of the most common ways that VoIP can be used to make cheap phone calls. You’ve probably heard about new technology that allows people to use broadband to make cheap phone calls. Perhaps you already make calls or video-calls yourself from your computer. Whatever you know already, it helps to have a clear, basic grasp of how this exciting new generation of telephone services works and how it can be used. The technical name for making cheap phone calls using broadband is ‘Voice Over Internet Protocol’. Some people call it ‘Voice Over IP’, or even ‘VoIP’ (say “voyp”). Perhaps you’ve heard of ‘VoIP phones’. VoIP is, basically, the umbrella term for the technology for making telephone calls using the Internet and broadband. It uses audio systems to encode speech in a way that means that it can be transmitted digitally over an Internet Protocol network. There are many ways of using VoIP technology and a broadband connection to make phone calls. Here are three of the most common. 1. PC to PCThe first, simplest and typically free way to use VoIP is ‘PC to PC’. For this, you’ll need to be at your computer, as will the person you’re calling. You’ll also both need a headset/microphone/speaker. And you’ll need either USB VoIP phone, which plugs into your computer’s USB socket. If you don’t have that, you can install or download a piece of software called a ‘softphone’. This allows VoIP calling without dedicated equipment. Though this is undoubtedly the cheapest way to make VoIP calls, the call quality is often not great. And you’re tied to your computer. 2. PC to PhoneThe second popular way to use voice over IP is by using your PC or computer to call a normal landline or mobile phone. The advantage of this is that the person you’re calling doesn’t need to have signed up with the same service, doesn’t need all the equipment etc. You, though, will be charged for these ‘outage’ calls. And you are, as above, tied to your PC. 3. Phone to PhoneA VoIP provider sends you a VoIP adaptor. You use this to connect your normal digital cordless (‘DECT’) telephone to the broadband modem / router on your computer. Once you’ve installed the VoIP provider’s software (this converts the analog signal to a digital one), you continue to use your phone exactly as before, using your existing broadband connection to make cheap telephone calls. To call, you pick up your existing digital cordless (DECT) phone and dial as normal. Your computer doesn’t even need to be switched on. When their phone rings at the other end, they answer as normal. The beauty of this final method of using voice over IP is that your computer doesn’t even have to be switched on for you to use the VoIP technology and broadband to make calls. The person you’re calling doesn’t have to have signed up to the same VoIP provider. Nor do they need to have broadband, or be at their computer. In fact, they don’t even need to have a computer. So there it is – three of the most common ways in which you can now use VoIP technology to make cheap phone calls.

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) has worked hard to improve the way individuals communicate with one another. Providing people with an alternative, cheaper way to connect with friends and family, its rise has challenged the services offered by traditional telecommunications companies. The result is impressive and statistics report that there are currently over 100 million subscribers to the technology.

Basically harnessing the power of the internet, VoIP allows its users to make free or cheap phone calls to others without the need for a landline. In fact, because the internet is capable of transmitting more information at much higher speeds than a normal telephone, as well as being able to utilise such things as video technology, the cost of speaking to others has been significantly reduced. Services, on the other hand, have been enhanced.

One of the biggest advantages of using VoIP as opposed to a traditional phone line is that call rates don’t change dependent on the time of day the call is made. In this way, on- and off- peak calling times have all but been made redundant. Not only that, but it is also possible to call any landline or mobile phone in the world, at any time, in a cost efficient manner.

For example, if a friend or family member is travelling around Italy for the summer and you want to keep in regular contact with them without spending a fortune, then VoIP provides the ideal solution. Indeed, it can cost as little as £0.014 per minute to call an Italian landline and £0.201 to a mobile. Not only that, but it is also possible to send text messages or set up voicemail.

In order to utilise VoIP technology, you need to download and install the relevant software onto your computer. Generally speaking, there are then two ways to go about making cheap calls: pay-as-you-go or monthly subscriptions. With pay-as-you-go, you can simply add credit to your account, which will then last for up to 180 days after each call is made. Monthly subscriptions, on the other hand, usually don’t require any long-term contracts and can be used from anywhere in the world.

This is great, in comparison to phone cards, for instance, where you can only use them in the country where they were bought and the credit runs out after a relatively short time, such as 30 days. Additionally, the call rates on phone cards can vary significantly and they don’t come with the added features seen with VoIP packages, like text messaging.

The advent of VoIP has brought with it many changes, not least that of low cost calls. As such, the way people speak to one another has been revolutionised and with the possibility of being able to make cheap calls to Italy, or anywhere else in the world, the power of connecting with friends and family is increasingly in the hands of the people.

VOIP technology has advanced to a stage where VOIP is no longer an interesting start up, but a strong and valid technological force that offers so many benefits, not the least of which is huge savings in long distance phone calls. Many businesses have gone from expensive and complicated intra-office phone systems to switching to a VOIP system because of the increase in efficiency and strong decrease in cost. The continuing advancement of VOIP technology is what makes this possible.

Residential VOIP refers to the software that allows you to download the technology onto your computer and then communicate with family, friends, and acquaintances in the same way you would on the telephone, but your computer is used as a telephone instead. Because the technology is based on phone communication through the Internet, anyone you want to contact will also need to download the same technological software on their computers, but don’t worry, this is actually very easy!

What if you still want to call people who don’t have VOIP? One of the smartest technological advances by the companies encouraging the development of VOIP technology was creating an adaptor. An adaptor hooks up to a regular phone, and hooks it up to your VOIP so you can still use the residential VOIP to call any phone, whether it is a VOIP phone, a landline, or even a cell phone! This little piece of equipment allows you all the benefits of VOIP without any of the potential restrictions that could make people hesitant to invest in this service.

With the advancement of portable VOIP phones (Vonage is perhaps the best known company that provides this service), the question has been brought up of whether or not VOIP phones will be able to ever replace cell phones, and what would the difference be? While the technology is there for this to happen, the infrastructure isn’t there yet; though it is getting closer with each passing day.

The advantage of this would be that VOIP would be far cheaper, since long distance wouldn’t cost nearly anything and there would be no restriction on minutes. A wireless VOIP phone is also referred to as a “Wi-Fi VOIP phone,” and needs networks in the same way wireless internet needs networks, to work, but more are popping up every day, and many cities plan to increase the number of hot spots, which would make this a more and more viable option.

Many cell phone companies, sensing ahead of time what this could mean for them if they refuse to adapt, now design phones that not only work as regular cell phones, but also have features that allow the user to switch to their VOIP account if they are close enough to a hot spot. While complete VOIP is a long ways off, the beginning structures are there, and as the VOIP technology improves, it would not be surprising to head towards the day where VOIP isn’t a side game, but the main choice available to all phone users.
